Samoa and the American Samoa are destinations for those seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation in a tropical paradise. It's perfect for nature enthusiasts, cultural explorers, and anyone longing to experience the warm hospitality of the Pacific Islands. With so much to see and experience, renting a car is the best way to make sure you don't miss anything-- we're here to help with that.
While exploring these islands, it's important to note the distinction between Samoa and its neighbor, American Samoa.
Samoa, an independent nation since 1962, is known for its vibrant Polynesian culture and stunning natural landscapes. American Samoa, on the other hand, is an unincorporated territory of the United States, with a distinct history and identity.
Both share cultural and historical ties but have different political systems and social atmospheres. Samoa offers a more traditional Polynesian experience, while American Samoa presents a unique blend of Polynesian culture and American influences. This distinction is crucial for travelers, as it influences visa requirements, currency, and the overall travel experience in each territory.
On our website you'll find car rental options for both Samoa and American Samoa.
In this page we cover Samoa. If you would like to learn more about the American Samoa, we have a dedicated section about renting and driving a car in the American Samoa.
Samoa (the independent Samoa) is split into two main islands: Upolu and Savai'i. Each island offers a unique experience for visitors. Upolu, home to the capital city Apia, is bustling with activities and cultural experiences. Here, you can visit the vibrant markets, explore the historical Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, or relax at the stunning Lalomanu Beach. On the other hand, Savai'i, the larger but less developed island, offers a more authentic and tranquil experience. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in the traditional Samoan way of life, witness the majestic blowholes at Alofaaga, or explore the untouched rainforests.
Why choose one island over the other? Upolu is perfect for those who seek a blend of adventure and convenience, with easy access to modern amenities and tourist attractions. Savai'i, in contrast, is ideal for travelers looking to disconnect and delve deep into Samoa's natural beauty and cultural heritage. No matter which island you choose, you'll find yourself surrounded by warm, welcoming locals, breathtaking landscapes, and a rich tapestry of culture that makes Samoa an unforgettable destination.

Driving in Samoa is a unique experience, combining scenic views with a sense of adventure. The roads, primarily around Upolu, are in good condition, making it relatively easy to navigate the island. However, in more remote areas, particularly on the island of Savai'i, roads can be rugged, requiring careful driving.
The pace of life here reflects in the driving style - relaxed and unhurried. It's an opportunity to embrace the island's laid-back atmosphere while exploring its natural beauty. Always remember, in Samoa, you drive on the left side of the road, a small but important detail for international visitors.
In Samoa, renting a car isn't just a convenience, it's often a necessity for travelers. The public transportation system, primarily buses, is limited and may not cater to all tourist destinations, especially in remote areas. Renting a car offers the freedom to explore the islands at your own pace, ensuring you don't miss out on hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path experiences. For those planning extensive exploration, especially on the island of Savai'i, a rental car is invaluable. However, for short stays or visits confined to major areas in Upolu, alternatives like taxis or buses might suffice.
Below is a summary of the most common places to rent a car on both islands of Samoa. We work with local and independent car rental companies located in these places.
